In a proactive response to a recent security incident, the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) is collaborating with state and federal law enforcement agencies to bolster security at the Converse Reservoir Dam, a critical infrastructure providing drinking water to Mobile residents.
During routine maintenance, scuba divers uncovered an improvised explosive device (IED) submerged near the dam. The device, resembling a grenade, was safely retrieved and detonated by a specialized multi-agency response team. Authorities have confirmed that the explosive could have posed a significant threat to both personnel and the water supply.
The coordinated effort to neutralize the threat involved the FBI Bomb Squad, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was notified, given the dam’s designation as critical federal infrastructure.
In light of this incident, MAWSS is implementing enhanced security measures to prevent future threats. These measures include increased surveillance, regular underwater inspections, and strengthened collaboration with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and integrity of Mobile’s water supply.
